What it is
USDA Organic and EU Organic are export certifications for organic produce sold into the United States and the European Union. USDA Organic is issued under the USDA NOP through an accredited body; EU Organic, with its EU leaf mark, is issued by an EU-accredited body. In India they are not a retail organic claim: FSSAI recognises only NPOP and PGS-India for that, and treats these two as export certifications.
Who it is for
These schemes are for producers and exporters whose buyers are in the United States or the European Union. Their main rules match NPOP's: a conversion period of 24 months for annual crops and 36 months for perennials, an annual inspection, and group certification on the same terms as NPOP. The indicative first-year cost for a 1–5 acre farm is ₹80,000+. That is an indicative range, not a quote.
What the badge means on theorganic.in
A green USDA Organic or EU Organic badge means we checked the certificate through its accredited body, it covers the category you are viewing, and it was valid on the date shown. It turns amber 60 days before expiry and grey once it lapses or is rejected. Grey is never hidden. The badge shows an export certification. It is not an Indian retail organic claim, which only NPOP or PGS-India can make.
How to get it
Ask a certification body that holds the USDA or EU accreditation you need, apply to it, and pass its annual inspection. Expect the same conversion period as NPOP: 24 months for annual crops and 36 months for perennials. For the Indian side of the process, see Getting certified. The certification-bodies directory shows which accredited bodies list export in their coverage.
Questions people actually ask
Who needs USDA Organic or EU Organic?
Producers and exporters selling organic produce to buyers in the United States (USDA Organic) or the European Union (EU Organic). If you sell only within India you need neither: FSSAI recognises NPOP and PGS-India for Indian organic claims.
Is NPOP the same as USDA or EU Organic?
This site treats them as separate certificates. A USDA Organic or EU Organic badge appears only when that certificate itself has been uploaded and checked; an NPOP certificate never shows as USDA or EU. The conversion periods are the same: {annual} for annual crops and {perennial} for perennials.
What does USDA or EU certification cost?
The indicative first-year cost for a 1–5 acre farm is {costUsdaEu}, against {costNpop} for NPOP. These are indicative ranges, not quotes, so confirm the cost with the body before you apply.
