The short answer
If you sell within India — at a santhai, to local stores, direct to households — PGS-India is designed for you and costs close to nothing, because your farmer group does the peer inspection. If you sell to retail chains, to exporters, or you want to say "India Organic" on a label, you need NPOP, which is a third-party audit and costs money every year. If you sell to the US or the EU, you need their scheme on top of NPOP.
What each one actually asks of you
- PGS-India — join or form a Local Group of at least 5 farmers farmers, keep a field diary, host peer inspections, get a Green certificate after the first chemical-free season and PGS-Organic after the conversion period.
- NPOP — engage an accredited certification body, maintain records to their format, pass an annual on-farm inspection, renew every year.
- USDA / EU — NPOP plus the importing country's requirements, handled through your certification body.

The three-year rule nobody mentions first
Land does not become organic the day you stop spraying. Most schemes require a conversion period — 36 months for perennials, 24 months for annual crops — during which your produce is sold as "in-conversion", not as certified organic. Plan your cash flow for those years before you start; this is the single most common reason first-time applicants drop out halfway.

What we do with your certificate
When you upload a certificate to your brand console we check the number against the issuing body's public register, badge your products with the scheme and the date we checked, and set a reminder 60 days before it expires. We never issue certificates, never charge for verification, and a lapsed certificate always goes grey — no exceptions and no paid reinstatement.
Questions people actually ask
Can I start with PGS and move to NPOP later?
Yes, and many groups do. The conversion period you have documented under PGS counts as evidence of chemical-free years when an NPOP body assesses your land, though the body decides how much of it to accept.
Is PGS-India accepted for export?
No. PGS-India is a domestic system. Export to most markets needs NPOP, and the US and EU need their own scheme on top.
What does a first-year NPOP certificate cost for a small farm?
Our dataset's indicative range is in the table above, with its source and the date we checked it. Costs vary by farm size, crop count and body — always confirm with the body directly.
